The Indian aviation sector is poised for significant expansion in 2025, with the anticipated launch of three new airlines: Shankh Air, Air Kerala, and Alhind Air. These carriers are in the final stages of securing regulatory approvals and aim to enhance both domestic and international connectivity.

Shankh Air: Uttar Pradesh First Scheduled Airline

Based in Lucknow, Shankh Air plans to commence operations by May 2025, pending the acquisition of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline intends to start with five Airbus A320-200 aircraft in its first year and expand its fleet by adding ten more aircraft in 2026. Initially focusing on domestic routes, Shankh Air aims to venture into international markets by the end of 2027. Financial backing includes a $50 million initial investment from Chairman Sharvan Kumar Vishwakarma and a $200 million commitment from its parent company, M/s Shankh Trading Pvt. Ltd.

Air Kerala: Enhancing Regional Connectivity

Kochi-based Air Kerala, founded by Dubai-based Malayali entrepreneurs, is preparing to launch scheduled flights in mid-2025. The airline aims to strengthen regional connectivity within Kerala and link key South Indian cities. Plans include operating from multiple airports, such as Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kannur, using a fleet of ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft. The first aircraft is expected to arrive by March or April 2025, with services commencing shortly thereafter. Long-term goals involve introducing narrow-body aircraft for international operations, starting with flights to Dubai by 2026.

Alhind Air: Expanding from Kerala

Calicut-based Alhind Air is also gearing up for a mid-2025 launch. Promoted by the Alhind Group, the airline plans to enhance regional connectivity within Kerala before expanding its domestic and international network. The initial fleet will consist of ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft, with the first of seven aircraft expected by March 2025. Operations will commence after trial flights and DGCA certification. Initial routes will cover key connections such as Kochi–Thiruvananthapuram–Calicut, with plans to connect 40 domestic airports over time. Within 18 months of launch, Alhind Air intends to expand to the Gulf region, catering to Kerala large expatriate population. Future plans include acquiring narrow-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, within two years to operate medium-haul international routes.

The introduction of these airlines is expected to create new travel opportunities, enhance competition, and benefit passengers with better connectivity and competitive fares. As these carriers finalize their approvals and prepare for takeoff, the Indian aviation landscape is set for a new era of growth and accessibility.
